What Are ChatGPT Ads? How They Work, What They Cost, and Whether They Belong in Your Budget

ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people a week. Now it sells ad space.
So what are ChatGPT ads? They're labeled, paid placements that show up below ChatGPT's answers, bought through OpenAI's own Ads Manager. If you already spend on search or social, you're probably asking one question: does this belong in the budget?
Maybe. Not for everyone, and not yet at scale. This guide covers how ChatGPT ads work, who sees them, what early advertisers are paying, and how to decide without betting a quarter's budget on a hunch. Platform facts link to OpenAI. Advertiser numbers are labeled as self-reported, because OpenAI says it doesn't have performance benchmarks yet.
ChatGPT Ads in 60 Seconds
- Where they run: Below ChatGPT's answers, labeled as ads, for logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans.
- How you buy: OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager, billed per impression or per click.
- How targeting works: Conversation context and advertiser "context hints." No keywords.
- What it costs: OpenAI suggests starting CPC bids at $3 to $5. Advertisers report paying $3 to $22 per click.
- Who should test: Marketers with a clear offer, tracking that works, and room for a small experiment.
What Are ChatGPT Ads?
ChatGPT ads are paid, labeled placements that appear below ChatGPT's answers for people on the Free and Go plans. Advertisers buy them through OpenAI's Ads Manager and get matched to the conversation, not to a keyword list. OpenAI says ads do not influence the answer itself.
Think of it as a sponsored card at the exact moment someone is mid-decision. Not a banner on a page they happen to be scrolling. Someone asks ChatGPT to compare vendors or explain what to look for in a paid media partner, and a relevant ad sits right below the answer.
One thing to get straight early: a paid ad is not the same as ChatGPT recommending your brand inside the answer. Ads buy the card. Recommendations are earned. We come back to that below.
How Do ChatGPT Ads Work?
What do ChatGPT ads look like?
Each ad has an advertiser name, logo, headline, short description, image, and a link to your landing page. It's labeled and kept apart from the answer. OpenAI is also testing a visual format that appears during image generation, starting in October 2026 with a small group of US advertisers, per its October 5 announcement.
How does ChatGPT choose which ad to show?
Through a relevance-weighted, second-price auction. Translation: a better match can beat a bigger bid. OpenAI looks at the conversation, your landing page, your ad copy, the context hints you provide, and personalization signals when users leave them on.
Here's what trips up search marketers: there are no keywords. Context hints describe the topics and conversations you want to appear near. They guide matching but don't guarantee delivery. And according to Search Engine Journal, Ads Manager has no search terms report, auction insights, or impression share, so you can't see why an ad matched. Your copy and your landing page do the work your keyword list used to do.
Who sees ChatGPT ads?
Logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, and Business users don't see ads, and neither do accounts identified as under 18. OpenAI hasn't published demographics for the eligible audience, so you're buying reach with less data than you're used to.
Free users can opt out of ads, but doing so reduces their daily message allowance. That's one more reason the audience skews toward lighter, free-tier users.
What can advertisers see about users?
Campaign metrics and their own tracked conversions: impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM, and conversions. Not conversations. For customer-list targeting, OpenAI's documentation says advertisers aren't told when a list matches a ChatGPT account, so the tool can't be used to find a specific person.
Users can switch off ads personalization. Per Gizmodo, though, ads may still be based on the current chat.
How Much Do ChatGPT Ads Cost?
It depends, and nobody can hand you a benchmark yet. OpenAI suggests starting CPC bids at $3 to $5. Advertisers who have spent real money report paying about $3 to $22 per click.
How you're billed
You pay per impression (CPM) or per valid click (CPC), with bids set per ad group. Conversion-optimized campaigns still bill per click, not per conversion.
What advertisers report
Every number below is self-reported, from Search Engine Journal's September 8 roundup.
The pattern: real CPCs run above OpenAI's starting suggestion, especially in the US. Hostinger found broad messaging underperformed and specific use cases did better. Specific beats broad.
What's the minimum budget?
Sources disagree. Some report a $25 daily minimum, others report none, and OpenAI's own Ads page advertises a $500 credit for new advertisers who spend $500. Check Ads Manager for the current rule.
The platform minimum isn't the number that matters, though. What matters is how much you need to spend to get a readable result at a $5 to $10 click. Decide that before you launch. Don't want to learn the platform on your own dime? Our ChatGPT ads management starts with a plan before spend.
ChatGPT Ads vs. Google Ads vs. Meta Ads
You already run at least one of the other two. Here's how ChatGPT stacks up.
The bottom line: ChatGPT ads are a test channel with real upside, not a replacement for the paid media you already run. Google still catches buyers who type the exact thing they want. Meta builds demand. ChatGPT meets people while they're still working out what to ask.
What Results Are Early Advertisers Seeing?
Mixed, and it depends who's talking. We'll label every claim.
The upside, from partners OpenAI cites. WeightWatchers saw attributed CPA 15.3% below its blended paid-search benchmark. Dose reported that 67% of incremental purchases came from net-new customers. Portland Leather said 93% of ad visitors were new. All three are partner-reported.
The upside, from an ad tech vendor. Criteo says CTRs run about 3x comparable formats and conversion rates are approaching 2x traditional search in some categories. That's Criteo's own reporting, not independent data.
The reality check. The B2B test above identified 146 organizations, and only five matched the ideal customer profile. One contributor to Entrepreneur reports that ChatGPT ad traffic isn't converting directly, with buyers researching in ChatGPT and converting later through branded, direct, or social channels. That's one opinion, not a verdict. It does mean last-click reporting may undersell the channel.
Should ChatGPT Ads Be in Your Budget?
Our take: a small, structured test, yes, for the right advertiser. A big reallocation, not yet.
Good fits for a test now
A clear offer with a research phase: software, professional services, education, travel, higher-margin ecommerce. Conversion tracking you trust. Buyers who already ask AI to compare their options. And margins that can absorb a $5 to $10 click.
Running B2B marketing? Judge the test on qualified leads, not clicks. Remember that test where five of 146 organizations fit the profile.
Reasons to wait
Thin margins. Shaky tracking. A category OpenAI's ad policies restrict. Or an expectation of Google-level reporting, because you won't get it yet.
How to run a test without betting the budget
- Ring-fence a separate test budget so it doesn't cannibalize search or social.
- Set success criteria before launch, using the same conversion definitions you use everywhere else.
- Run one structured test long enough to read.
- Judge on qualified outcomes, then decide whether to scale, tweak, or stop.
Results aren't guaranteed. Anyone who promises them is guessing.
ChatGPT Ads vs. Getting Recommended by ChatGPT
Paid buys you the card. The answer has to be earned.
A paid placement gets you a labeled spot under the response. Showing up inside the answer is a different game: answer engine optimization, built on content, authority, and the kind of SEO AI systems trust enough to cite. Different budgets, different playbooks. They work best together, because an ad that points to a page ChatGPT already trusts has a better shot.
How Do You Get Started With ChatGPT Ads?
OpenAI's setup runs in three steps: create the campaign, add ad details, launch and learn. In practice:
- Check availability. Your legal entity has to be based in a listed country.
- Sign up at ads.openai.com and create your account.
- Build the campaign: objective, budget, and bid.
- Add your ad details and context hints. Headline and description space is tight, so every word earns its place.
- Install conversion tracking (the pixel or the Conversions API) and add UTMs before you spend a dollar.
- Launch small, check delivery, and read results against your own benchmarks.
Nothing scales until tracking is confirmed. If you'd rather have a team that's already in the platform, see our ChatGPT ads services.
What to Do Next
ChatGPT ads are real, early, and moving fast. The smart move isn't a rush or a pass. It's a small test with tracking in place and a decision rule set before you spend a dollar.
