Web Design 101 for 2019: What a Great Website Looks Like Today

David Bosley

The Internet has changed a great deal over the past decade, which means that website design has changed a lot, too. We’re a long way past using GeoCities to throw up a quick website and calling it a day. Today’s audience expects something elegant, informative, and responsive. Below, we’ll talk about the trends that are most important to consider when building or tweaking your website in 2019 and beyond:

1. Responsive Load Time

One of the single most important aspects of website design is ensuring that pages load quickly. In 2019, you’re vying among hundreds of other websites and apps for your audience’s attention. If your website doesn’t load quickly enough, they’re simply going to move onto the next distraction. In fact, a four second increase in loading time will also increase bounce rates by 100%, and an eight second increase in load time increases bounce rates by 150%. As you load your site with impressive graphics and other bells and whistles, make sure everything loads quickly or it will be all for naught.

2. Flat Design

Flat design is the concept of going for simplistic website design with only the most important content available. There are several key advantages of opting for a flat design. First, it makes for quick load time, which, as previously discussed, keeps your bounce rate low. Second, it’s simple to translate to mobile. Finally, it improves the customer experience. As long as you know what’s important to your audience, you’ll make it much easier for them to get it quickly and move on with their day.

3. Contact Information

Ultimately, a well-designed website’s purpose is to drive people to you. Don’t make it hard for your audience to reach out to you when they’re interested. More than half of all people think that the single most important missing element of corporate websites is contact info. Post your contact information prominently and make it easy to find from any page. Give your users a variety of ways to get in touch. At the very least, include an email, phone number, and an address if you have a physical location.

Making your contact information easy to find is one of the best ways to boost conversions with your web design.

4. Organic Shapes

Organic shapes are shapes that don’t naturally occur. Basically, they’re imperfect or not even. The benefit of using organic shapes is that they look human-made. It’s not something that comes out of the box. It gives your website a bit more personality and makes it feel unique.

5. Getting off the Grid

The typical design grid makes it very easy for designers to build something simple. The problem with these out-of-the-box solutions is that they’re going to look similar to everyone else. A visitor who navigates to your website and is greeted but an unusual layout will be jarred out of their daze and likely curious enough to dig a bit deeper. The key is finding a design that looks chaotic but actually has a very strategic purpose.
