PBJ’s Tricks of the Trade: Overcoming (Blog) Writer’s Block

Creating new and unique content for your company’s blog day in and day out can be a difficult task, and here at PBJ Marketing, we’re no stranger to the curse of (blog) writer’s block. Luckily, we have years of experience overcoming this common obstacle and want to share a few ways to kiss writer’s block goodbye forever.

 

  1. Talk to your most trusted confidant… yourself
    When writer’s block strikes, forget about your audience for a moment and have a conversation with yourself. Whether you talk out loud or write a letter to yourself, having a discussion with your most trusted confidant is an excellent way to shake off the cobwebs. However, if you regularly write your blogs in a coffee shop, be prepared to be met with some worried looks.
  2. Be profane
    Your blog probably features “clean” content, but when the frustration of writer’s block gets to be too much, swearing can help you get past it. In fact, studies show that there’s a biological benefit to it. You can even take it a step further and include profanities in your blog piece and take them out later. Remember: always write with emotion.
  3. Do the dishes (or another mundane task)
    Trying to force your writing does more harm than good. Instead, take a step away and do a trivial task. Our personal favorite is doing the dishes while listening to music. Even the great Don Draper has his own way of reigniting his creativity.
  4. Forget about grammar
    Ernest Hemingway famously wrote, “write drunk and edit sober.” While we don’t fully support polishing off a bottle of wine and banging out 600 words, there’s something to be said about this statement. If you’re having difficulty with your next blog piece, forget about writing it perfectly. Just get your ideas down and thoroughly edit it later.
  5. Reread old blogs
    Write blogs on a long enough timeline, and eventually, your style will change. Try going back and read some of your old posts and see if you can even recognize yourself as a writer. Rereading old work can add some serious fuel to your creative fire.
