Oops! AdWords, AdSense Mix Up Costs Teen $120k

David Bosley

Historically, it’s been the dream of millions of people to make it to the silver screen, but with the rise of the internet and social media, “YouTube star” has become a legitimate occupation.

However, this doesn’t come without some serious pitfalls. The team at PBJ Marketing is always on the lookout for weird and unusual tech news, and boy, do we have a doozy!

A recent report from El Pais – a Spanish online and print publication (and re-reported by The Merkle) – tells us the about the hardships of Spanish pre-teen Jose Javier. Blinded by his ambitions of wanting to become a YouTube star paired with a HUGE mix up on his part, left this 12-year-old owing Google $120,000.

Yes, you read that properly. Javier confused the popular Google AdSense program (which pays content creators and website owners for ad space) with Google AdWords (which companies use to pay Google for advertising.

Thankfully, this story has a happy ending. The search engine giant took pity on Mr. Javier and his family and proceeded to cancel the pending AdWords balance. For Mr. Javier he did end up becoming “internet famous”, but for all the wrong reasons.
