We’ve discussed the importance of video content in the past, and a recent major milestone just proved how important it is to make video a cornerstone of your digital strategy.According to a recent report from Ooyala, last quarter, long-form video content made up the majority of watch time across every screen, including TVs, computers, tablets, and smartphones. This trend might come as no surprise, but it does have numerous implications for shifting consumer habits and how they consume content.Specifically, the video index report showed that long-form video content consumption on smartphones increased from 47 percent to 55 percent during the first three months of 2017. Meanwhile, desktop computers jumped from 55 percent to 65 percent while Internet-capable TVs rose from 96 percent to 98 percent.“Smartphones finished the quarter with 46.9 percent of all plays – nearly equaling the total for all mobile devices last year,” the report said. “It was the highest total for smartphones since we began the Video Index, up nearly 20 percent year-over-year… Tablets, too, set a record globally, finishing the quarter with nearly 10 percent of all plays (9.6 percent).”
Make a Schedule and Stick to it.Keeping your ideas organized when creating video content is paramount. Create a consistent delivery schedule and stick to it. There are a lot of moving parts to create video content and if you start missing deadlines and sporadically releasing content, you’ll find it’s much harder to build your user base.Find Your Format. What type of information are you trying to convey and what is the most efficient delivery method? Consider these questions and you can start to determine your format, including look, feel, and focus.Concentrate on Easy Consumption.Consumers have short attention spans, and you can make it easier to digest by breaking it down into smaller pieces. The goal is to keep your audience coming back for more. Like writing blog content, breaking your videos out into lists or chapters allows consumers to skip around and find exactly what they want.Be Responsive and TimelyUse video content to stay on top of the latest occurrences in your industry. If there is a significant development, be responsive and weigh in on it. Demonstrating your position as an industry thought-leader is a quick way to build a loyal audience.
