Instagram Rewrites the Social Ad Playbook with “Canvas” Ads

In early 2016, Facebook announced that it will extend its “canvas” ad format to Instagram, and now, more than a year later, the social media giant is starting to deliver on its promise.

You might notice them next time you check Instagram, they’re hard to miss. Some experts have called canvas ads “a creative kitchen sink.” They offer the option of full-screen, in-line videos, photo carousels and panoramic photos, creating an immersive experience to build visually engaging stories paired with audio, still images, and text.

“We are beginning to test an integration of Canvas with ads in Instagram Stories,” said an Instagram spokesperson in an emailed statement, according to Marketing Land. “Since the launch of ads in stories, we’ve been focused on delivering business value to advertisers and Canvas offers a seamless extension of the full-screen immersive experience.”
