Getting Your Digital Marketing Ready for 2019

David Bosley

It’s never too early to start setting yourself up for future success. In fact, now is the perfect time to start preparing for 2019. Improve your processes and get ready for brand-new trends today and you’ll be able to hit the ground running come January.

We can’t be 100% sure where the future is going to take us, but we have a good idea of what is and isn’t currently working. With that in mind, here are four trends that we’re sure will be important throughout 2019 and likely much longer than that:

1. Digital Ads Get Shorter

Your audience’s attention span isn’t very long. On average, 89% of them are engaged in the first ten seconds, but less than half of them are engaged longer than a minute. As more companies realize this, digital marketing in 2019 will start trending to shorter and shorter videos. Consider putting together a portfolio of extremely short bite-sized videos that are about ten seconds or less. They should grab your audience’s attention and immediately push them to the next step while you’re certain you still have their focus. You’ll be way ahead of the competition that’s still pushing out long-form, boring ads that drop viewers long before the conclusion.

2. Speed Will be King

One of the most important search algorithm changes in 2018 was Google’s Speed Update which began giving penalties to sites that didn’t load quickly. For now, this update is only impacting the very slowest websites in an effort to drive people to websites that are actually responsive. If this rollout is similar to other ones, however, this is just the beginning. Throughout 2019 it’s likely that Google will begin adding more weight to loading speed and penalizing websites that are simply below average instead of poor. Getting your load times up to speed will be critical if you want to continue to enjoy a positive search rank in 2019.

For SEO, speed is going to rule as the biggest topic of concern in 2019.

3. Valuable Content Takes Precedence

Digital advertising will always have an important place in our marketing mix, but digital marketing in 2019 is likely to be heavily focused on actual content. By the end of 2018, an estimated 30% of all Internet users will be employing ad blockers. This is still heavily skewed towards those on traditional desktops and laptops. Once the first viable ad blocker hits Android and iOS, these numbers will almost certainly skyrocket.

Get ahead of the curve by focusing a bit less on advertising and a bit more on valuable content to draw your prospects in. You’ll be ahead of the curve when and if a true digital marketing apocalypse ever hits.

4. Creativity Becomes a Prerequisite for Success

There’s no uniform digital marketing blueprint that works for every single company, but there are plenty of tried-and-true strategies. The problem is that everybody’s employing them. You don’t necessarily need to go big or go home, but you have to find a way to stand out from your competition. Start brainstorming now and you’ll have some great ideas ready to go in the new year.
