Alert! Facebook’s Update Will Impact “Fake News”

Fake News

At the rate we’re going, “fake news” is going to be the phrase of the year, but not if Facebook has something to say about it.

Previously, the social media giant made strides to limit the number of fake news stories that appear of users’ newsfeed. Now, the company is taking it a step further by banning pages that share fake news from buying ads. However, if you’ve accidentally shared a news story labeled as fake on your brand’s page, don’t worry, Facebook is only targeting repeat offenders.

“Now, if a Page repeatedly shares stories that have been marked as false by third-party fact-checkers, they will no longer be able to buy ads on Facebook,” Facebook Product Manager Satwik Shukla wrote in a blog post. “If Pages stop sharing false news, they may be eligible to start running ads again.”

The primary objective of the new initiative is to reduce the distribution of false news leads and help users make more informed decisions when they encounter inaccurate stories. But ultimately, Facebook hopes to prevent offenders from making money.

Facebook ads are a critical part of any digital marketing strategy, and it’s reassuring to know that they’re making strides to make the marketplace more competitive among legitimate companies. What do you think? We’d love to hear your opinion.
